I have been having lots of fun with my new Cricut Explore Air 2 and recently lots of my family members are having babies so what a great combination to create some customized baby iron on images. I LOVE my pets and my family members also LOVE their pets especially their dogs so to add a customized touch I created these personalized baby bodysuits with posterized images of their dogs on them. Here’s how I did it;
- Took an image of their dogs as a jpeg. It’s best to find images that are on a neutral background or a background without lots of distractions. This will make it easier to eliminate the background. I used this image of my cousin’s three Portuguese Water Dogs taken in my studio.

- I used Photoshop for posterizing the image. Bring the jpeg into Photoshop and convert it to Grayscale (Image>Mode>Grayscale) then in the bottom right click on the circle icon and pick “Levels” adjustment layer. Adjust the image to it has more contrast from lights to dark. Then use the quick selection tool from the left hand tool bar to select the dogs out from the background.
3. Double click on the background layer to the right and rename it to layer 0. You can create a new layer under it but make sure the layer with the dog image is selected afterwards. Click on Select>Inverse and this will make the dancing ants pick the entire background then click on Edit>Cut to eliminate the background.
4. Now click on the circle icon bottom right and pick “Posterize” to add this new adjustment layer (make sure this layer is at the top of all layers). Make sure that Posterize levels is at 2 – this will be in it’s property window.
5. You can use the Levels adjustment layer to add more dark areas or lighter areas to your image as you like. Then I will zoom in and paint the really small pixels either black or white. You want detail but remember this is a superficial posterized image of your picture so you don’t want the really tiny pixels as this is hard for the Cricut to cut. That’s why I color them in. Then use the magic wand tool to select all the black areas.![zoomed in paint pixels](https://craftyjennblog.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/zoomed-in-paint-pixels1.jpg?w=1086)
6. Once you have all the posterized black areas selected click File>Save As>PNG
You want to save the selection as a PNG file which is what you can then import into Cricut Design Space. When I upload the PNG file I pick Moderately Complex and save as a Cut file. Then create a new project and insert your new posterized dogs PNG file. I added “Partners in Crime” under the dogs and cut this out of Cricut Heat Transfer Vinyl.![design space with dogs png](https://craftyjennblog.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/design-space-with-dogs-png.jpg?w=1086)
Even though this is a complex image the Cricut did cut it really well. It did take a bit of effort to weed all the negative space but was well worth it! Here’s the finished project after ironing it onto the baby bodysuit! Makes for a SUPER cute personalized baby bodysuit for any pet lover!
Here’s another example with two pit bulls and one Pomeranian;
