So I’ve finally figured out the best way to create my signature acrylic pour paintings using the silhouettes. I have created two YouTube videos where I show step-by-step how I do this technique. I use my pre-cut vinyl stencils which you can purchase on my CraftyJenn Art Website. I also use Liquitex Gloss Varnish to adhere the vinyl to the canvas. This stuff dries fast and works great though you do need to use caution on how much you use and where.
I first start by taking my vinyl sticker off the peelable paper. You will want to use the negative side. Then I place it on the canvas and determine where I would like it to be. I prefer to have it in the first third of the canvas but you can place it wherever you feel it will work best 🙂 The nice part about the vinyl stencils is that they are sticky on one side but you can keep lifting them up and moving them until you are happy with placement. Once I have placement I get the Liquitex gloss varnish and a brush. I lift the vinyl stencil and paint the varnish just where the edge of the silhouette is making sure to go under the stencil and out from it. I don’t want a thick layer just a thin layer. Then I place the stencil down over the wet varnish and paint over the edge of the silhouette again over the vinyl pressing it into the wet varnish and off onto the canvas. This will create a nice seal once it’s dry.
You don’t want to paint a large area with the varnish as it can make peeling the vinyl off after very difficult and might pull up some of the gesso. I just go about a 1/2 inch under and out from the silhouette edge. *Tip: don’t paint any varnish under the straight edge opposite from the silhouette shaped edge as this will result in a line on your painting.*
After the varnish is dry you can proceed with the acrylic pour painting/swipe 🙂 I created this super cute and vibrant Rainbow Unicorn and I LOVE how it turned out!!! It’s super vibrant and colorful and I LOVE how the unicorn dissipates into the rainbow 🙂
